I was so ready to push. No 3 was coming and I just wanted to them out! But, they weren't yet down far enough. The midwife said to me, just breathe through the next few contractions, but don't push. This is perhaps one of the hardest things I've ever had to do. Just hold this moment. The baby was not yet in a position to safely come through. It took every ounce of energy to resist what my body was wanting, urging, ready and intuitively up for. I had to hold and resist the natural inclination to push, and just breath through. |
When we are fixers, stabilisers, or dreamers, we find it very difficult to labour through the moment of just holding, and have to resist every intuitive and natural urge to go with what is a clear action we can take. These are the moments in life, we need a darn good midwife!!
What if we began to ponder leadership through the lens of midwifery in the moments of uncertainty? What do we discover about the gifts, importance, the capacity to hold, through this lens? What is brought to the table for our communities? How does it shift our expectations of leaders? How does it shift our expectations of ourselves? When we put leadership, holding the moment and midwifery side by side, what do we discover . . . . . .
